Ms. Becca’s Story
My name is Ms. Becca Baker. I began my performance career at the age of three at Miss LaQuita’s School of Dance in Tulsa, Oklahoma. In my first recital, that same year, I played the part of a little piggy dancing through the barnyard in the musical “Oklahoma”. To some that may have seemed like a small part, but to me it felt like the biggest moment ever! After that I never wanted to leave the stage. And as you may have guessed, I did not.
I continued taking ballet and tap classes until the age of six. At that time, my mother enrolled me in a new performance studio that had just opened near our home. I took several dance classes, as well as a class called Musical Theater. It was amazing! Immediately, I knew I wanted to be a star. In these classes I was exposed to many different styles of dance, music, and acting. I made lots of friends, who I still keep in touch with today. Without the self-confidence gained from these classes, I’m not sure who, or where, I would be today.
I was greatly involved in dance competitions and musical performances throughout my grade school, high school, and college years. I thought I was on my way to Broadway, but a hereditary back disease led me in a new path. After three surgeries, and not quite 23 years old, I decided to stop performing and start passing on my love for the arts through teaching full time. I wasn’t sure if I would be as happy teaching and not performing, but to my surprise it was a blessing in disguise. I love teaching! Children are like sponges just waiting for you to pour out everything you have onto them, so that they can soak in every bit of knowledge possible.
After graduating from Colombia State College, where I received degrees in Commercial Performance and Dance Studio Management, I was accepted the position of Musical Theater and Dance Director of Theater Arts, Inc. in Broken Arrow, OK. I taught full-time at Theater Arts, Inc. for 6 years, and couldn’t imagine doing anything else! At Theatre Arts, Inc., I taught all styles of dance, private lessons, musical theater, and headed several 1st place winning Dance Companies and Performance Troupes. I also continued to choreograph for theater companies, schools, pageants, and events around the community.
Shortly after my move to Tennessee in 2004, I opened Baker Performance Academy in the Murfreesboro area because I want your children to have the same opportunities and fun that I had as a child, and continue to have today.
I have received so many wonderful attributes from my dance and musical theater background. For example: my self-discipline, confidence, a creative mind, posture, balance, grace, and respect (not only for others, but also for myself). These are just a few things that come to my mind - everyone takes something different with them.
Dancing, singing and acting are my passion! I believe through teaching your children, and passing along the positive attributes I have acquired, it will help them in their journey through life.
Whether your child wants to be a Broadway star, or just have fun with their friends in a positive environment, these classes are for them. I will strive to make you and your child happy. Whether it be that extra help to get them ready for an upcoming audition or a much needed compliment on a bad day, I will be there for you and them.
Thank you for taking the time to read this lengthy story. I appreciate your time, trust, and support as we continue to build Baker Performance Academy.
Sincerely, Ms. Becca
